Which Surf Poncho is Better for Your Brand?

Recycled Microfiber vs. Organic Cotton

At Source Find China (SFC), we have worked in the sustainable apparel supply chain for many years. Recently, many of our clients who are new to this product ask us the same question: “I want to do a Bulk Buy for Surf Ponchos (changing robes), but should I choose Recycled Microfiber (RPET) or Organic Cotton?”

Actually, it’s like asking “Which is better, a sports car or an SUV?” For a Surf Poncho, there is no “best” material—only the one that fits your brand positioning. Today, SFC will share our production experience and real client stories to help procurement managers make the right choice.

1. Do You Want “Fast Drying” or “Soft Touch”?

Recycled Microfiber (RPET) is the “king of fast drying” for Surf Ponchos. It absorbs water very quickly, and if you shake it after use and hang it in the sea breeze, it dries in no time. For hardcore surfers, divers, or backpackers who travel with a Towel Poncho, this lightweight material is a lifesaver.
But if you want a “thick and heavy” feel, Organic Cotton is the top choice. A Surf Poncho made of cotton becomes heavy when wet and keeps you very warm—perfect for that cold wind after you come out of the water. Many high-end resort brands we work with at SFC choose organic cotton because that skin-friendly texture is something microfiber just cannot copy.

2. Sourcing Cost and the Often Ignored Shipping Cost

In a Bulk Buy, cost is always the core. But you cannot just look at the unit price of the poncho itself; you must also look at the shipping cost.
Usually, Recycled Microfiber (RPET) has a better price for raw materials and processing. More importantly, its lightweight advantage is very clear in logistics. When SFC makes shipping plans for our clients, we find that you can fit more pieces in the same box, and each piece is lighter. For DTC brands offering free global shipping, this means: Low Sourcing Price + Low Shipping Cost = Higher Net Profit.
On the other hand, Organic Cotton is more expensive because of strict farming rules and eco-friendly processing. Usually, the unit price for organic cotton is about 20% to 35% higher than RPET. Also, an Organic Cotton Towel Poncho is much heavier, which will push your international shipping costs even higher. If your brand is mainly in physical retail stores, or if your customers are happy to pay more for that “premium weight,” then the cost is worth it. But if you sell 100% online, SFC suggests you must calculate this “hidden killer” carefully.

3. Tell Your Brand Sustainability Story

Everyone is talking about being eco-friendly now. The story for RPET is “turning waste into treasure”—taking plastic bottles from the ocean and making them into a stylish Surf Poncho. Young people love this story. Organic Cotton is about being “natural and safe”—no chemicals or pesticides from farming to factory. It is gentle on the skin and the planet.
SFC reminds everyone: no matter which one you choose, check the certificates. GRS (for recycled) and OEKO-TEX (for safety) are your “entry tickets” to developed markets. Don’t ignore these details.

4. How Do Other Eco Brands Choose?

To help you understand better, SFC wants to share two real cases:

  • Case 1: An Australian E-commerce Brand’s Choice One of our Australian clients sells surfing gear online. They chose RPET (Recycled Microfiber) for their Surf Ponchos. The reason was simple: labor and shipping in Australia are very expensive. They needed a product that tells a “marine protection” story and is light enough to keep global shipping costs low. It turned out to be a best-seller on their website.
  • Case 2: A Swiss Retail Chain’s Choice Another client from Switzerland has over ten high-end outdoor stores. During the sampling stage, they tested both microfiber and organic cotton. In the end, they chose Organic Cotton. They believe that when a customer walks into a store, the first thing they do is “touch the fabric.” In a high-end market like Switzerland, customers value the safety and thickness of natural materials. They don’t mind paying a bit more for better quality.
